A new flânerie

Hello fellow flâneurs,

It’s been a while. Since my last post here, things have happened, the earth has rotated around itself a few more times and I now find myself growing increasingly distant and dissatisfied with Instagram which had been my primary way of keeping in touch with folks. Yes it was mainly trite memes or occasional inside jokes which after a while elicit only a vapid chuckle, but it was a way to communicate (for some definition of ‘communication’). My friend Rohit once described scrolling through Instagram Reels as a ‘psychological session’ that leaves you feeling empty (or worse dirty) from within and I don’t think many will disagree with that.

Anyway, the point is - I need to find a new way to communicate with my friends so here I am trying to build a habit of writing things that I have done throughout the week. I’m also planning to write more technical and probably non-technical posts as well.

Big shout out to Sathya Bhat and Thejesh GN - their consistency is inspiring to say the least.

So here it is -

Weekly Notes 13/2026

Manali and I went to see Project Hail Mary on Tuesday. Our company has a film club where we get to pick one movie every month and Foundry picks up the tab for the movie tickets (and popcorn too). This month’s pick was Project Hail Mary. I went into the movie without reading the book and found it a bit underwhelming. The film glosses over the wider, societal aspects of the incoming apocalypse and is very self-indulgent and self-congratulatory when it focuses on the main character’s struggles. That being said it’s not a bad film - it’s visually stunning and Ryan Gosling’s performance keeps the film going. I just had somewhat high hopes considering all the hype around it online.

Things have been very busy at work with planning and meetings. In addition, this week I found myself struggling with UI components of our application, particularly the Qt Event Filters. A close() signal couldn’t get to my dialog box and I can’t for the life of me figure out why. This probably warrants its own post which I’ll write next time, by which point hopefully I have a solution to this quandary.

A work-heavy week meant I didn’t have much time or energy to exercise. I went to the gym only twice this week and ran just once. Regularly scheduled badminton session was a bit of a dull one as well. The windy, gloomy weather wasn’t of much help either. I think the seasonal depression has started to kick in, again.

Our weekend was a lazy one, with a short stroll and lunch at a Japanese place on Saturday. I had a chicken ramen bowl and Manali had a prawn katsu curry with rice.

Sunday was mostly spent on getting groceries and cursing the start of Daylight Saving, which kicked in on 29th. I was incidentally awake to watch the clock go from 00:59 to 02:00. There must be a German word for such a mildly surreal experience.
